Did you know that baby turtles have belly buttons? 🐢👀 A baby turtle is attached to a yolk sac for nutrition while developing in the egg, kind of like baby birds 🐣 The umbilical scar is on the plastron and will disappear as the baby grows larger. 📷 Baby common snapping turtle

Because severe storms present a real and serious danger to guests, staff, and volunteers, Wesselman Woods will be closing early today to make sure everyone has ample time to get out of the forest and get home safely. We'll close today (May 8) at 2 PM ⛈️ Stay safe out there!

Fungus Appreciation Post ✨🍄✨ All the recent rain and humidity did make for some excellent fungal finds in the forest. How many of these can you name?! 🤔

Oh, the GALL of it all 🌳 This HUGE gall was spotted on an Ash tree from Main Trail. We estimate this gall is about 3 ft in diameter (~the size of a large beach ball) filled w/gnarly, burled wood. Galls form from infections due to insects, viruses, bacteria, and/or fungi 🐜🍄

Hang tight 🌿👀 A volunteer captured these great photos of a male giant stag beetle (aka elk stag beetle) 🌳 The "elaphus" in their Latin name ("Lucanus elaphus") stems from the Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos) meaning “deer”.
