In the early hours of July 16th, a pod of 55 long-finned pilot whales came ashore at Tolsta Beach on the Isle of Lewis. This short film shows a glimpse into some of the work undertaken by SMASS and colleagues following this mass stranding event.

DOUBLE LUNGE FEEDING FIN WHALES πŸ‹ Totally stunned, we watched 2 fin whales lunge feeding at the surface for around 30 mins. Dolphins, bluefin tuna and seabirds rounded up the shoals of fish into baitballs, allowing this incredible feeding event to take place in the Celtic Sea.

Fin whales are making a strong comeback in the Southern Ocean. "It is simply sensational. The results show over 50,000 fin whales in the Scotia Sea alone. That is more than 3x higher than previously estimated for the entire Southern Ocean." Martin Biuw. hi.no/en/hi/news/202…
