#OnThisDay 16 Sept 1959, Beatrice Miriam Viscountess Samuel (née Franklin) was buried at Willesden. A philanthropist & social worker, she co-founded the West Central Jewish Girls Club & led the Union of Jewish Women. Wife of statesman Herbert Samuel, she is buried beside him.

#OnThisDay, 12 Oct 1880, Sarah Rachel Levison — Madame Rachel — died in Woking jail. Once London’s most notorious beautician, she sold cosmetics, promising clients they’d be “Beautiful for Ever.” Twice jailed for fraud, she rests in an unmarked grave at Willesden Jewish Cemetery.

#OnThisDay, 22 Oct 1821, Marion Hartog (née Moss) was born, poet, author & editor of The Jewish Sabbath Journal, the first Jewish women’s periodical. With her sister Celia, she co-wrote some of the first books by Jewish women. Marion died in 1907 and is buried at WJC

#OnThisDay, 6 Nov 1918, Staff Sister Dorah “Bunny” Bernstein, a South African military nurse, died aged 29 of Spanish Flu days before WWI ended. Dorah was praised for her winning personality and devotion to duty. Buried with full military honours at Willesden Jewish Cemetery.
