#OnThisDay in 1917, 16 women were arrested for picketing the White House to demand that President Wilson support #WomensSuffrage. The arrested suffragists were part of the #SilentSentinels, a group of over 2,000 women led by National Women's Party founder #AlicePaul.

The #SenecaFallsConvention, the first women's rights convention in the U.S., began #OnThisDay in 1848. While obtaining the right to vote was not originally the main goal, suffragists later viewed the Convention as the meeting that launched the American #WomensSuffrage movement.

The National Association of Colored Women (NACW), the first secular national organization dedicated to the improving the lives of Black women, was founded #OnThisDay in 1896. NACW's motto, "lifting as we climb," was coined by co-founder and first president #MaryChurchTerrell.
