The idea that we have control but something can wrest control from us is completely nonsensical. If we truly ever had control (we don’t), the only way to lose it wld be to purposefully give it away. Any other explanation describes the illusion of control, not the condition of it.

Brilliant. There’s no “control” garbage there. Do what you can. That isn’t control. It’s doing what you can to influence what you can.

Not believing in control is not a position of low personal power. On the contrary, it is accurate, clarifying, & helps one find leverage & influence where others discard their efforts because they have “no control.”

Working on a career pivot and some new writing. Here is my first new post in a long time. Thank you for reading. Honored by any shares. Tip of the cap to Robert Pirsig who made this post a possibility with writing from 50 years ago. makingtheplay.com/2023/06/13/the…

Kicking around the idea that finding the extraordinary in the common is the secret of creating an incredible life. It’s not a new idea, nor is it mine originally.

Ex. from my post yesterday. When working out these days I often have the thought, “I am not a cardio athlete.” I know it’s a thought tied to my mood. It will pass. The enduring belief is, “I’m am going to play the role of a cardio athlete for the purpose of climbing a mountain.”

I used to love the quote “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.” Can’t stand it now. It’s actually very limiting. So many times we hear high performers & people of all walks of life who exceed their wildest expectations. Open expectations are prob best.

New post is up. Many thanks to the inspiration from jonah berger and his book Magic Words for the reminder of a lesson I’ve taught through the years. Great book. Highly recommended. makingtheplay.com/2023/06/27/the…

One of the great moments of awe in life, for me, is seeing bald eagles in flight. Simple, yet unbelievably “awe-some” pleasure. Been privileged to see it many times. Never gets old.

One interesting, & seriously absurdly short sighted things I see on SM is the, “Stop blaming your age,” messages. Do you folks have any idea what types of parent, spouse, child issues one can have that affect their health, time to workout, $ to afford food, etc? Do what you can.

This hung in the LOHS mail room for years, humorously but accurately summarizing the enormous impact Steve Hawley had on the staff, students, and community. The greatest man I ever worked with. Feeling this loss hard tonight, but eternally grateful that I we worked together.
