The first field penetration trials against a Ferdinand tank destroyer were held #OTD in 1943. The results were discouraging. Commanders demanded that tank guns larger than an 85 mm had to developed in order to fight new heavily armoured German AFVs. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

Today in 1914, Austria-Hungary delivers a punitive 10-point ultimatum to Serbia following Archduke Ferdinand’s assassination in Sarajevo in June. The demands, which seem designed to be rejected, target Serbian sovereignty. Serbia accepts all but one. Austria-Hungary declares war

23 July 1951. Philippe Pétain died (aged 95). He was a French war hero in the First World War but he collaborated with Nazi Germany during WW2 while serving as the Chief of State of Vichy France from 1940 to 1944.

A bit of nostalgia on my way to the Isle-of-Wight. Over 50 years have passed since my mother sewed my Young Ornithologists Club (YOC) badge onto my anorak sleeve upside down! #ClarencePier #OldPortsmouth

Memorial marking where the 1944 Pluto pipeline entered the English Channel at Shanklin on the Isle of Wight. The plaque was originally installed on #ShanklinPier but was temporarily lost after what was left of the pier was demolished in the 1980s. Now reinstated on the beachfront

A variation on the theme of the Unknown Warrior. A soldier is entombed in Hürtgen, representing those who fought in the area at the end of 1944. In a deliberate move, a combatant was chosen without knowledge of whether he was German or American. Helmets adorn his sarcophagus.

Mackerel fishing in the Solent, sad to see #SpitbankFort in a seemingly derelict state. I stayed on there for a couple of nights in 2018 when the place was a hotel and had a great time. Hopefully it will become accessible again at some point.

Pretty pleased with this #charityshop purchase. ‘The Cast Iron Sixth: A History of the 6th Battalion - London Regiment’. Timely for my walk across the Loos battlefield in October.

Congratulating the Lionesses! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿💂 When the nation has something to celebrate, it calls upon the Armed Forces 🎉 It was an honour for the military to lead the Lionesses’ victory parade in London today. Congratulations from all England fans in the UK Armed Forces.

Popped into COMBE MARTIN MUSEUM and enjoyed talking to the volunteers and viewing the collection. This old radio is rigged up to play a selection of short historical speeches using push buttons - simple but really effective.

A stopover at the RAF Memorial on Cooper’s Hill #Runnymede on our way down to Gatwick Airport. My first visit to pay my respects to the 20k+ airmen and women who are commemorated there.

So, off we go on a Norwegian coastal cruise. First up is the Fredriksberg Fort on the Nordnes Hill in #Bergen. Built in 1666/67 it was decommissioned in the early part of the 20th Century. Used as a place of execution in the 1800s it is nowadays open to the public.
