This wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) was found in the lawn area of the Arboretum yesterday. That "beak" is extended and used to pierce small, soft-bodied insects. The wheel bug then liquifies the contents of the other insect with enzymes and sucks the juices out of its prey.

Witch hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is blooming now at the Arboretum. Some nice specimens of this native, late-blooming shrub can be found near the bridge at the top of Taylor Trail, where it connects to Guthrie Loop Trail.

Harbingers of bloom! Harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is starting to bloom and Virginia bluebells (Mertensia virginica) and other spring ephemeral leaves are up along the Sheldon Trail! Just a couple were found today, but soon there will be many!

At least one spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) was blooming today! Harbinger of spring (Erigenia bulbosa) is near peak bloom. Look for harbinger of spring near the "woodland wildflowers" sign along Nuttall Trail, and along Sheldon Trail near its intersection with Nuttall Trail.
