It's almost here. The (virtual) summer school event of the, well, summer. bit.ly/2UtOa4b July 6 - 10: -Metagenomics -Environmental Metabolomics -Genome-scale Metabolomic Modeling -Reactive Transport Modeling -Synthesis Open to anyone. Please share! #2020summerschool

I put together a six-week seminar series on microbial 'omics. The purpose here is to clarify key concepts in simple, digestible terms with no practical discussions. Details, schedule, and a registration link is here: merenlab.org/2020/06/27/sem…

First comprehensive eukaryotic genome-resolved metagenomic survey from polar, temperate, and tropical sunlit oceans using 280 billion metagenomic reads (equivalent of 10,000 human genomes) from Tara Oceans. ~700 eukaryotic MAGs >10 Mbp are now available! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Dr. Henry: Over the past year, we’ve had a much increased number of different strains of COVID-19 over the past year. We’ve gone from a few dozen in March 2020 to over 100 in March 2021.

Henry: Strains from last year replaced; we’re seeing a lot of the B117 strain. Not a surprise; it has increased transmissibility. We knew it was likely to spread more easily and cause more people to be infected.

Henry: B.C. health officials are monitoring other strains. and we started to see different mutations in making a variant more transmissible...what we can see is that many of them share the same mutation that worries us.

Today WHO has announced a new naming system for key #COVID19 variants. The labels are based on the Greek alphabet (i.e. Alpha, Beta, Gamma, etc), making them simple, easy to say and remember. 👉 bit.ly/3fxWgnn

Some of the hottest places on Planet Earth will be found in the US Pacific Northwest and Western Canada. This intensity of heat this far north is simply outrageous.

And last but certainly not least, on Wednesday Xuan.L will be giving a talk about how multiplex tiling primer design and wastewater matrix type influence sensitivity for sequencing SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

Our group is looking for grad student(s) for summer or fall 2022. If you have any keen students, pls tell them to join us in beautiful Vancouver to develop and apply new molecular tools for improving sustainable wastewater treatment. (RTs are appreciated!) aeesp.org/jobs/4093

Interested in 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing on Oxford Nanopore ? Check out our preprint (first-authored by the amazing Xuan.L), where we validate high-throughput UMI-based sequencing of 16S rRNA genes using Q20+ chemistry. TLDR: 3 is the magic number!🪄🧬 tinyurl.com/46pba94k (1/8)
