Our recent Amazonian expedition kicked off in #SãoPaulo #Brazil. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Luciana Paulino and the Universidade Federal do ABC #UFABC, Santo André, for hosting David Good and Simone Renwick, PhD!

Great talk by David Good University of Guelph on bridging #microbiome research and advocacy with the Yanomami people of the Amazon rainforest. His work offers valuable insights into the microbiome of the Yanomami people, who continue to live a traditional Amazonian way of life. The Yanomami Foundation

Up next, meet Gwen Freeze, a recent University of Guelph MSc grad who studied Parvimonas micra—an oral bacterium linked to colorectal cancer. Gwen observed that a #Yanomami P. micra was less likely to cause disease! Such strain-specific differences could help guide future treatment strategies!

Meet Panuya Athithan, a PhD student in Dr. Allen-Vercoe's lab University of Guelph , studying resilient microbes found in both industrialized and #Yanomami gut microbiotas. Her research explores how these bacteria thrive across diverse lifestyles and their impact on health and well-being.

Meet Britta De Pessemier, a CMET PhD student visiting the Knight lab UC San Diego Health. As part of the #YanomamiMicrobiomeProject, Britta uses innovative multi-omics approaches to study skin #microbiome dynamics and how Westernization affects health and skin disease. Exciting work!

Meet Hansi Botschner, our 6th featured early-career scientist on the #YanomamiMicrobiomeProject! A University of Guelph Microbiology undergrad, Hansi isolates and studies the diverse bacteria of the #Yanomami gut, uncovering the secrets of a healthy microbiome. Truly inspiring work. Stay tuned!

Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Laura Hainel! A Uni Hohenheim MSc student, Laura is visiting University of Guelph to study how #Yanomami gut bacteria interact with the immune system, offering insights into immune health and potential therapies. Check out Laura at work:
