Large numbers of Kestrels, Buzzards & Red Kites are being seen daily around the #LDV at present following the hay cutting operations (feeding on frogs and insects on the ground) - a dramatic change in status over the last 20 years for the last two species but great to see.

Our ringing team have been busy recently in the #LDV with the annual sampling of breeding warblers (now in its 13th year of using standardised & comparable methods), providing a useful way of monitoring productivity throughout the site - summary to follow later in the season 🐦

Our ringing team have had some very productive evening roost sessions in the #LDV lately, with over 900 Swallows and 50 Sand Martins caught and ringed in recent weeks - great to see that it has been a successful breeding season for both species.

We’ve also been joined by vets from ZSL recently (sampling birds to monitor the spread of diseases carried by mosquitos). Great to be able to help & make more of the opportunities from our bird ringing studies & the contribution that NNRs make for research & science 🐦

During Mariana's visit we also took the opportunity to ring a brood of Barn Owls at one site – originally a clutch of five but just two large chicks remained at fledging stage. All of this data will also form part of the BTO nest recording scheme.

Up to six Whinchats have been present during the week at North Duffield Carrs (favoured location for passage birds moving through the site), and three were caught and ringed (all moulting adults) with perhaps the juveniles still to follow as passage progresses York Birding

The Pectoral Sandpiper present on Sunday is the 12th record for the #LDV & the 5th to appear on the pool at Wheldrake Ings. This individual is also the 4th adult to have occurred & all records bar one have been in autumn - neatly fitting the national pattern of occurrences.

Despite the intense heat today dawn is really starting to feel more autumnal now, with early morning mist in the floodplain & stock arriving to aftermath-graze the meadows. Large numbers of passage warblers are also on the move (Sedge/Reed Warbler & Chiffchaff) York Birding
