This may look like a medieval door from a castle ... but surprisingly it is a fossil! This huge monolith is a crushed trunk of the Carboniferous tree Sigillaria from Bacup in Lancashire. It measures over half a metre wide and is on display Manchester Museum. #FossilFriday

With the last burst of summer weather this week, we managed to squeeze in a bit of field work! This delicately preserved shell is Camptonectes, a type of thin-shelled scallop. This would have been living in the tropical Jurassic seas that once covered Pickering. #FossilFriday

Spotting fossils in the limestone of the Yorkshire Dales can be tricky due to all the lichens. A great place to look, however, is in stream beds! Check out these lovely little corals and crinoid stems we saw near Grassington #FossilFriday
