Lots of misreporting that the Trump administration is backtracking on *visas* issued to foreign students. In fact, the reversal today has nothing to do with visas. The administration instead is restoring records for foreign students maintained in an ICE database called SEVIS,

Whooping cough cases are rising, and doctors are bracing for another tough year. There have been 8,485 cases reported so far in 2025, according to preliminary data from the CDC. That’s twice as many cases as this time last year. apnews.com/article/whoopi…

HHS Sec. RFK Jr. plans to require placebo-controlled trials for all new vaccines, apparently even for well-known diseases like measles. This could delay access to lifesaving vaccines, undermine trust, ignore decades of scientific and ethical standards and put lives at risk.

Thank you rt hon Sir Desmond Swayne TD MP for raising Alaa's case in yesterday's debate. Alaa's family are still waiting to hear news of progress following Prime Minister Starmer's call with Sisi over two months ago. #freealaa

“In this situation, the idea that a laboratorian would intentionally compromise a colleague’s protective suit, thus putting them at potential risk of infection with a deadly agent is unconscionable and incredibly serious.” forbes.com/sites/markkort…

Even when there is a literal lab leak, virologist Dr. Angela Rasmussen insists it does not count as a lab leak because it’s a plumbing leak, not a pathogen leak. When informed nobody knows what was in the water, Rasmussen says it still doesn’t count if nobody was confirmed infected🤡

Big win against a big bully. We have been through so much leading up to this but only a fraction of what countless victims of NSO's malicious mercenary services provided to ruthless autocrats and corrupt security agencies. Never Let Bullies Win

We’re losing Laila Soueif very soon if Alaa Abd El Fattah is not released. That’s the reality. As groups and individuals we have a very short window to act and get both egy and uk government to act NOW . Release Alaa and give this woman a chance to live.

The executive order signed on Monday was not a ban or moratorium on risky pathogen research with the potential to cause pandemics. It was a charge for OSTP and other agency heads to come up with a new policy & strategy for governing and tracking such research in under 180 days.

Bloomberg is reporting that President Trump is about to rescind the chip export restrictions, and will choose not to enforce Biden's AI Diffusion Rule. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and NVIDIA have all lobbied heavily for these restrictions to be lifted.

Access to jailed Istanbul mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's account on X has been blocked in Turkey - the latest move against President Erdogan's key rival. Imamoglu was arrested in March on corruption charges, and nominated as his opposition CHP's presidential candidate while in custody.

Reminder that in 2018, Peter Daszak of EcoHealth Alliance sought to mislead a federal funding agency. He wrote once they got the $, they would allocate the research differently, sending experiments to Wuhan. Policy on dangerous gain-of-function must be cognizant of bad actors.

That paper actually weakens the zoonosis hypothesis, since - according to its thesis - we should have seen a lot of recombinant viruses close to SARS-CoV-2 in many places in South East Asia and China. We have not. Recombination works very well in a research setting though.
