There are more places to gamble on the high street than there are gp surgeries. 19 inspections in a year. Is it any wonder these places aren't concerned about any action from the regulator?

🎰 Gambling reform is needed – today's BBC investigation into Adult Gaming Centres shows why. Now, we’re teaming up with Social Market Foundation to explore how local authorities can be better empowered to tackle gambling-related harm on Britain’s high streets 👇 brent.gov.uk/news-in-brent/…

For too long, the house has always won – with big businesses extracting ever more profit from our high streets, while furthering financial addiction amongst their players. (1/3)

I reacted to BBC File On 4's investigation into the failure of gambling venues to protect customers - which won't be a surprise to anyone except apparently the Government (Department for Culture, Media and Sport) and the Regulator (Gambling Commission).

'Harm from gambling is not inevitable - it is preventable.' As a start how about: 1⃣Constrain the addictive products 2⃣End gambling advertising 3⃣Shield policy makers from gambling lobbyists Will Prochaska on the BBC Red Sofa yesterday

👏Huge congratulations to Haringey Council for being recognised at the MJ awards - not least for their pioneering decision to be the first Council to join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads!

Promising noises about government clamping down on alcohol advertising, as they already have done on junk food ads.... 🤔What might be next?? telegraph.co.uk/politics/2025/…

I'm calling for a parliamentary debate on the “aim to permit” rule that forces councils to approve new gambling shops, even when high streets are already overrun and communities object. Local voices should matter. Community cohesion should matter. Let's put people before profit.

If the government wants to raise money, it should tax gambling properly, recover millions lost to COVID fraud, and make sure the wealthiest pay their fair share.

Thank you to Dr Beccy Cooper MP, Officer of the Gambling Reform APPG, for continuing to raise awareness of the need to treat gambling as a public health issue in the The Fabian Society latest pamphlet.

"We can stop a fish and chip shop opening next to a school, but not an Adult Gaming Centre next to a homeless shelter." Our Harlesden councillors spoke to the Gambling Reform APPG about the powers councils and communities need to have a say over their high streets 👇 #StopTheSpread

Gambling harm is a public health issue, with dangerous addictive products damaging far too many individuals, families and communities.  In my recent Fabian Ideas paper, I call for urgent reform of gambling oversight: fabians.org.uk/publication/wh…
