My thoughts are with the Catholic community in Newfoundland and Labrador today as they mourn the passing of Pope Francis. The leader of the Roman Catholic Church was recognized worldwide as a man of healing and I hope people find comfort in that in the days ahead.

This is welcome news from a leader with a clear commitment to listening to Canadians and making decisions that make sense. I have long advocated for this, and am pleased to see Marine Atlantic fares will be dropped to equal the playing field for our province.

My thoughts today are with the people of Vancouver and the local Filipino community. I have spoken with B.C. Premier Eby and expressed this province’s condolences. To the injured and the families of the victims, know that all Canadians feel your pain and are thinking of you.

My thoughts are with Marc Garneau’s family over the loss of an amazing Canadian. He was a friend and I loved our conversations. He would tell the kids all about space, happy to answer any questions they had, including embarrassing ones. He was the best of who we are as Canadians.

Heartbroken to hear of John McCallum’s passing. He was a good friend and someone I leaned on often for advice—especially on immigration and the economy. Thoughtful, kind, and always generous with his time. I’ll miss him greatly. My deepest condolences to his family.
