We are incredibly grateful for the investment by UZH Science into our long-term fieldwork and our amazing new research station that makes fieldwork more productive (and comfortable!) 🙏🏻 #40years

New work from our research in Shark Bay out in PNASNews today. UZH Science University of Bristol Biological Sciences FIU. Unlike in humans, intergroup alliances in dolphins emerge from a promiscuous mating system - no need for male pair bonds or parental care!

Our new paper provides a compelling argument that wild animal research stations are CRITICAL aspects of conservation. Because much of conservation efforts are detached from the lives of wild animals, the value that behavioral research provides to conservation is often forgotten.

Similar to humans, chimpanzees combine vocalizations into larger meaningful structures, as UZH researchers have shown. This ability might be evolutionarily more ancient than previously thought: news.uzh.ch/en/articles/me… Simon W. Townsend @Mael_Lx UZH Science NCCR Evolving Language

In the last years, Shark Bay's remarkable dolphins have appeared on the BBC's Animal Einsteins, Netflix's ANIMAL, and in The Secrets of Friendship on CBC. Now it's Switzerland's turn, with the two-episode Under the Spell of the Dolphins on SRF's Einstein. Enjoy it if you can! :-)

Phase 2 of the 2024 Shark Bay Dolphin Research field season is underway with a new base set up on the remote Dirk Harthog Island. With brilliant weather, we have thoroughly explored this new + stunning field site. Meeting new dolphins, tiger sharks, dugongs + turtles, is a very happy team!
