Day 20 of our look back over 30 years: our Gonville Place crossing campaign collected hundreds of petition signatures & led to the county council reinstalling the segregated pedestrian/cyclist crossing onto Parker's Piece after it had been downgraded to a narrower shared Toucan.

In 1998, postcards sent by our supporters persuaded Cambridgeshire County Council that permanently restricting motor traffic on Bridge Street was the right way to go. Many years later, who would go back? The street is a thriving place of people cycling, walking and visiting local businesses.

Our efforts to connect Cambridgeshire County Council with Dutch consultancy Haskoning paid dividends for people walking & cycling in the south of Cambridge. The Dutch-style roundabout at Fendon Road was a UK first, with a protected ring for cyclists and zebra crossings on each arm for pedestrians.

It was a pleasure to talk to County Councillor Dr Alex Bulat last week about sustainable transport in her division and beyond. We met at St Ives bus station and discussed the need for more local bus services and improvements to infrastructure for walking, wheeling and cycling.

A key issue that is raised time and again is permeability. E.g. in 1998 we secured a cut-through between Rustat Road & Cambridge Leisure Park and, in 2024, we supported Better Walking for West Chesterton in their successful campaign to secure new links from the Westbrook Centre.

Day 24: Camcycle has long called for better links to and from the villages surrounding Cambridge and welcomed the plan for 12 new Greenways. We continue to scrutinse the developing routes & are enjoying the new high-quality Cowley Road section, part of the Waterbeach Greenway.

Parking at Cambridge station had been an issue since 1995, so we welcomed the 2016 opening of Cyclepoint. With nearly 3,000 spaces, it's the UK's largest cycle park. We scrutinised designs, tested cycle racks & continue to work with others on improved security & accessibility.

The first CYCLOPS junction in Cambridge at Gilbert Road and Warwick Road is the highlight of the Greater Cambridge Partnership Histon Road scheme. Camcycle inspired the design by sharing a new idea from Greater Manchester. This previously hostile junction is now a cycle route suitable for all.

In 2008, Camcycle set out a vision for 'Mill Road reclaimed for humans'. We refreshed it in 2018/19, trialling a parklet & working with residents on a call for long-lasting improvements. The current bus gate was installed in 2024 & we're now campaigning for a better streetscape.

Camcycle worked with waterbeachcc to ensure the developing Waterbeach New Town was designed to make walking & cycling the obvious choice for short journeys. This included replacing a proposed main road past the school with an active travel path, improving safety & air quality.

Much of the quality of the Greater Cambridge Partnership Milton Road scheme is testament to the campaigning of the 'Milton Road Alliance' between Camcycle and local residents' groups. The result is nearly 2 miles of protected cycle lanes, with cycling priority at side roads and safer junctions.

The default 20mph for roads in Welsh communities has been one of the most successful UK road safety initiatives this decade. It cost just £10 per head and delivers huge benefits across a wide range of areas including 630 fewer KSIs pa and £45 pa lower insurance for drivers.

Our final look back at 30 years of better cycling just has to celebrate the Chisholm Trail 🚲 It took 23 years from Jim's vision to reality but the section connecting Cambridge North to Coldham's Lane has already been an overwhelming success. We're still campaigning for part 2..

Great to see Cambridgeshire & Peterborough’s mayor Paul Bristow joining other UK mayors in a joint statement to create a 3,500 mile national active travel network. This includes local networks for walking & cycling, & a commitment to transform the school run through safer routes.
