Some pretty things from the office trap this morning: the audacious Angle Shades, the subtle Sallow, the fabulous Frosted Orange, and the ball-achingly beautiful Burnished Brass #TeamMoth

A wet morning and afternoon for volunteers at Flanders Moss @ForthNatureScot today. This gave an insight into how important peat bogs are to our #environment . 🤔💭Did you know #Scottish peat bogs hold 1.7b tons of Carbon?

Flanders Moss is getting wetter and wetter thanks to the installation of 'mega dams'. Great conditions for sphagnum to grow and peat to form! 👍 Read more in the latest blog: ow.ly/QaQ550Gf1Km #peat #sphagnum Peatland ACTION

At 2mm not easy to photograph, this tiny larva will eventually morph into a Sundew Plume #moth & help sustain the population on #HumberheadLevels #Yorkshire's stronghold of an enigmatic & iconic species that is able to avoid being eaten by its carnivorous host plant Sundew😵

How many bog balloons we found in a year? Surely not many just on our 3 reserves...What happens on a bigger scale? If this doesn't put you off balloon-releases, I don't know what will. Former NatureScot account @ForthNatureScot David Pickett @BethiaPearson Chris Packham wp.me/p8PJqv-2WY

For those of you that are keen gardeners, here is a list of people and companies that not only use peat, but also wish to push Europe’s remaining bogs off the edge, alongside countless species that live on them. Change is needed and it is needed now. Defra UK

This is a story about peat — the brown stuff lurking in bogs and swamps and potting soil — and why it may be nature’s greatest champion against climate change. nyti.ms/3BYREk1

Found 7 Rannoch Brindled Beauty #moths at Flanders Moss today (4 ♀️ & 3 ♂️ incl. one mating pair). The ♀️ is flightless. At this time of year, she climbs up a tree trunk or fence post and emits pheromones to attract the male.

Tiny #Adder on the boardwalk at Flanders Moss today. Body no thicker than an Earthworm, and no longer than a large Common Lizard. Presumably one of last year's young. Also 3 Rannoch Brindled Beauty #moths. Fuzzy head-on pic as light was poor. One very bedraggled.

Rannoch Brindled Beauty #moths at Flanders Moss. The hairy female is flightless, and climbs tree trunks or fence posts to attract the flying males using pheromones.
