About one in six pregnant women in Australia are now diagnosed with gestational diabetes. According to Paul Glasziou (Bond University) + jadoust (UQ News), rates have more than doubled since the thresholds for diagnosis were changed. theconversation.com/1-in-6-women-a…

I do hope countries that deny vaccination to children <5 years take heed of this study and so many others showing vaccines protect young kids. Vaccine was 80% effective vs no vaccine in preventing emergency department or urgent care encounters. Bivalent vaccine more protective

In the world of metastasing item numbers, over-governance & underfunding there is a proposal to add an item number for domestic violence. Adding item numbers with tiny carrots in them won't work. Here's why. medicalrepublic.com.au/why-a-domestic…

Suggesting that training up a whole bunch of new doctors to address this issue is only one half of the coin. You need to ‘retain’ those who know how the system works too, rather than just throwing ‘fresh meat’ on The Grinder. abc.net.au/news/2023-08-1… via ABC Australia

For years, I raised concern treating AFib detected by watches may not avert stroke/save lives. RCT out now shows anticoag after detection by implanted devices (more accurate & higher risk pop) leads to more bleeding without significant benefit. 1/ nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…

Having spent a lot of time studying the biology of ageing and frailty, I firmly believe that people do die of old age. Excellent article on why we need to recognise this as the population ages.

People who fall for false information tend to be overconfident in how they think—not just what they think. Data: those who overestimate their math & reasoning skills are more susceptible to conspiracy theories. Critical thinking requires a healthy diet of intellectual humility.

Many diagnostic tests are not 100% accurate – even in the era of big data and machine learning, they never will be. As @aidybarnett + Nicole White (QUT) write, it's partly because people are inherently variable, and tests can be built on limited samples. theconversation.com/tests-that-dia…

Preventative health checks for women in mid-life are being provided to those who are most in need, contrasting with trends where those who are more disadvantaged tend to receive less primary health care. ow.ly/lrKC50PP1i5

The RACGP has re-iterated its concern about the North Queensland Pharmacy Scope of Practice Pilot in light of the Government’s announcement of the pilot’s expansion. The initial pilot has not yet begun, let alone been evaluated. Patient safety must come first. #pharmacy

The problem with the term ‘lifestyle’ diseases, is that they are so highly linked with poverty. People only have the choices available to them, which is why it is so key to make health about community not individuals Sarah Berry theage.com.au/lifestyle/heal…

Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) President RACGP Gov should be providing funding to imbed pharmacists IN general practice to use the skills they ALREADY have to improve medication use etc. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia won't like that though because pharmacy owners can't make money out of that and pharmacists would have employment options.

Written consent from a patient for a remote/virtual Telehealth is about the most ridiculous thing yet from the bureaucrazy Worse-it has the potential to shut out the most vulnerable from Telehealth. Those who can’t afford technology or who can’t use it=the most disadvantaged.
