Restaurants exempted from new Junk Fees legislation. In Chicago, many prominent restaurants tack 20% surcharges onto bills, to pay benefits for min-wage employees. Ok, where's proof? And why not raise menu prices 20%? They want to trick consumers into paying more!

Growing up in Canada, I was always told how lucky I was to have access to free healthcare. I now watch from afar as friends and family back home see their health deteriorate as they wait interminably for care.

One would normally want to wait longer to evaluate the effects of major policy changes, but the results of the first three days of Congestion Pricing in New York City are so striking that it is already possible to make some (at least preliminary) conclusions. (A 🧵)

It’s delightful to read how, in their own muddled way, food companies are rediscovering the law of downward-sloping demand. ā€œPackaged food and snack company executives see sustained volume growth as the way forwardā€¦ā€ wsj.com/articles/why-f…

Unclear about specific concern. If merely requiring transparency on data used to set prices, fine. But subtext is differential pricing is wrong/illegal. Why the new word, surveillance pricing? Documented practices predate internet. Segmented pricing, zone pricing … old hat.

The perils of refusing to discuss unintended costs of regulation. GDPR being only one of the ways Europe’s efforts to protect consumers instead held back its economy. Time to acknowledge ā€œtrade-offsā€ into European regulatory discussions.

Perhaps unsurprising that math/quant courses with ā€œobjectiveā€ answers to assignments, more students outsource homework to Claude. Solution: embrace this in applied classes. For core classes that teach methods, just use more in-class evaluations to audit mastery of concepts.

This is not political. it’s about transparency & rebuilding consumer trust. In 2023, words ā€œgreedflationā€ & ā€œcollusionā€ were thrown around by angry consumers due to opaque price inflation at shelf. We should welcome transparency re when price increases do/don’t increase profits
