I imagine Ana knows this but for the record this attitude is ungenerous, especially when the book in question is a WWI-era western-spy thriller about time travel. The average American is plenty capable of enjoying a postmodern novel and assuming otherwise is needlessly divisive.

Because people are asking: I have very little knowledge of what's become of D since the events described in this post... I assume she's still in NY, and based on what shows up on Google it looks like the fund is still active. I don't know what the money supports at this point
